In this talk, Dr. Miller presents an advanced level overview of
conducting an equine humane case investigation. He focuses on
applicable laws, processing the crime scene, examining the horse itself,
and collecting and presenting evidence in court. Presenter: Grant Miller received
his undergraduate degree from UC Davis in animal science in 1999 and his
veterinary degree from the same university in 2004. Immediately after
graduating, he began working as an equine and livestock practitioner in
the northern San Francisco Bay Area, focusing on geriatric medicine,
sports medicine, veterinary forensics, acupuncture, and chiropractic
care. He founded a 501(c)3 organization called The Sonoma County CHANGE
Program to assist local animal law enforcement with equine humane
cases. Since its inception in 2007, CHANGE has assisted in
rehabilitating and rehoming over 120 critically ill and starved horses.
Dr. Miller has co-authored and published several articles on the subject
of management and rehabilitation of starved horses as well as
guidelines on equine care standards in the State of California. He has
also served as an expert witness in several dozen equine humane cases,
